Movement is life. The couch is a daily object designed to provide comfort, space for friends to relax and currently, for people with mobility restrictions who have a hard time getting in and out of typical couches can share in this experience. This new couch, meant for everyone, is structurally designed and built on human movement. |

Pier 40, Westside Highway, NY designed and transformed into exhibition environment. The cotton lounge is a peaceful safe meditative escape from the city, a public bar constructed entirely of raw cotton. An interior plan consisting of 3 bars and 2 lounge couches overlooking the framed view of the Hudson River waves rolling past. The cotton walls are sprayed, fire-proofed, remaining soft and voluptuous cotton to the touch. The bar top stands on plexi-glass bricks, stuffed with cotton, to form our igloo cotton bars. Each bar is fabricated directly from CAD drawings, using a CNC router (Computer Numeric Controlled). |
A steel and lace laminated base supports the chaise lounge. The steel is fabricated with CNC machining to be folded to form a stable base. The chaise is designed for its inhabitant to reach zero gravity, where the legs are raised above the heart center, to relieve the lumbar disc compression, expand lung capacity and improve circulation. The standard building product, corrugated curvy wall is laminated with lace to span and curve around 1200 linear feet creating an environment for the Women's Dining. The lace covers slip over illuminated 9'-0" fluorescent blow up lights forming the entrance to the women's fashion show. The tattoo carpet was fabricated using a CNC template. |
The die cut chandelier spans the room at a dimension of 40'-0" by 40'-0". A hand sculpted bear rug cut from a digital pattern has its head at a height of 20", ideal for sitting on or sticking your head inside! The die cut birds migrate over the women's fashion. The chandelier chandeliers are rotated to lock in perpendicular to the wall made of CNC milled wall panels within an aluminum extrusion frame, forming 3D chandelier openings. The VIP room at 40'-0" by 40'-0" is entirely sheathed in faux fur. Any surface is a luxury to hang out on while doing business. CNC routing manufacture of the Tattoo Fence that frames the 1800 sq ft environment called the Riviera. |
Renovation of a summer home for a couple, their baby and their guests. We design at the base for accesibility and beyond to engage the available range of motion for each inhabitant. Designing for comfort and style to meet the needs of each inhabitant is crucial in the development of all construction. The pool lies down the hill and by code needs a 4'-0" high fence. We have designed a habitable boundary, where the wheelchair can be stored within the wall, for ease of transfer to the adjacent seat that houses storage of pool equipment within and plants overhanging the wall. The wall also has embedded within it, a bar for serving cold drinks. While the edge of the pool is also graded for ease of transfer directly from the wheelchair to the water. |
Candy Bar manufactured with CNC (Computer Numerical Control) routing process. The bar is cross-braced with a 9’-0” Fluorescent Blow-up Light for the Kids Lounge at Project Global . |
Aluminum extrusion system, custom formed to undulate Spanish moss overhead, spanning 1800 sq. ft. Wall panels slide into aluminum extruded verticals, twin-wall polycarbonate panels, mounted with digital pattern printed on transparency. Mirrored furniture extends the experience of the rich smelling overhead moss, extending the portholes of light on other planes (vertical and parallel). Image is captured dynamically throughout the garden lounge, as if in an outdoor room.

Ten cameras mounted in the round, to three-dimensionally capture movement and the body’s range of motion (x,y,z coordinates are located by at least three of the ten cameras at any given point in time to locate each body marker in space for digital mapping). The available movement and choreography is captured for the individual working with yoga and pilates instructor Sarah Gluck. This digital map lays the framework for a 3D architectural model, directly sculpted from the movement, designing supports, built aids, to enable independent movement and stretching, integrated into the client’s daily patterned movement at home. |

Pedestrian Studio is a young, New York City based architectural Pedestrian Studio is active in organizing international conferences at the American Institute of Architects New York (AIANY), including; “FIT CITY: Promoting Physical Activity through Design” in collaboration with New York Department of Health and “Public Toilets, Gender and Accessibility.” As well, Pedestrian Studio is collaborating with NYU RUSK Rehab hospital and Movement Engineering on an interdisciplinary research project for Spinal Cord Injury and Design. Robyne Kassen, Assoc. AIA, is the Design Director of Pedestrian Studio. She has a Masters of Architecture from Pratt Institute, and has been educated in Canada, Denmark and the U.S. Robyne received a grant in 2006 from the Boston Society of Architects and NYU Motion Capture Studio, for architectural research, investigating design and movement, using the range of motion on an individual with T-6 spinal cord injury as a starting point for design. |
